EXTINCTION

The sounds will are heavier a little more old school, more Industrial. Think LED.s in blue, green.... alien electronic glow . The Decor....something like, HR Geiger, Alien, Species, and the likes. As always the show starts at 10 pm at the Seabright bar and Lounge. This time, the cover will be $5 at the door or $3 if you bring us a cool piece of broken electronics to be used for display/play time...:) The more interesting the better, I'm thinking computer guts, grinding gears, and things that one might find if they were walking through the "Event Horizon". This is your chance to really be a part of the event, make your own decor, and hellish suits. Extinction, should feel like a abandoned, angry, gutted spacecraft, left in the guts of Hell.

Hope to see you all there, bring out the whips and chains and latex!

Music to buy now

Okay, so Rick asked about music that I would highly recommend, so here goes nothing. I'm going to start in the 2004-2006 regime and then I'll talk about 2008 music later. Some of this I have HIGHLY recommended in the past but I'm doing it again since there are those of you who need a soap ænima. (Please somebody get the reference).

1. Das Ich, Lava/Glut. I have been recommending this since I received the advance in 2003. You NEED this album, but what you really need is a copy of the promotional album they released for DJs. Call their label and see if you can get it (Danse Macabre... however you spell it).

2. Coil, The Ape of Naples. Why is this album more important than other Coil albums? Well, let's see... OH... this is the album that contains all of the bits that they SHOULD have released on Nothing Records but didn't since they're a bunch of *@&*!s.

3. 8Khz Mono, Monochromator. While you and your buddies were off thinking that :wumpscut: is talented, these guys have been TEARING UP the European scene for more than four years. Just run out and BUY anything they have.

There's a song on there called "One," and often times I would play it at the end of the night at clubs. A lot of people would dance to it and then ask me what it was... so I just told them it was the new :wumpscut:. I find it hilarious that when I tell people that some new music they enjoy is :wumpscut:, the music is okay... but if I said it was a bunch of Europeans nobody heard of in the Bay Area... then I'd probably get slapped.

By the way, these guys do a much more traditional type of EBM than the crap that passes for EBM nowadays... (you know.. "terror EBM"... "noise EBM," or whatever these asshats parading around as musicians want to call it).

4. Spetznaz, just buy anything of theirs and see if you like it. David King of DeathGuild fame booked these guys for November somewhere in San Francisco. They are ACTUAL EBM. Yes, as in Front 242/Nitzer Ebb/Fixmer+McCartney-style EBM. Basically, some guys who stand up at the drumkit, a synth line or two, and some crazy rivethead who is 6' tall and 100lbs yelling about how much society sucks.

5. The Nine, Invasion. A band so popular that their friends took their songs, remixed them.. and put them out on an album for them, (or at least that's what they used to tell people). Seriously, if you like synth, why the hell don't you have this album? One of the best synth albums to come out in years and NOBODY has bought it since their distribution sucks.

6. Just buy the new System Syn album. For those of you who don't know System Syn, you are missing out on quite a bit. Sure, Atom Strange can't write a verse of lyrics to save his life, but he can program and write a chorus line that will have you hooked and singing it for weeks.

7. Michigan, Red Dawn. You like synth, right? Here's ANOTHER famous synth band that Europeans kill for but nobody here plays. Just buy this album and anything else you can find by them.

8. The Three Cold Men. Three UGLY, UGLY, UGLY Italians who are all famous music producers... if you see any of their remixes, go ahead and buy them since they are talented. They have a very nice cover of "Fade to Grey" by Visage.

More Defiance-type Updates + NEW MUSIC REVIEWS

So lately I've been playing around a lot with the people doing Psychward at the :retox: in San Francisco. It's a fun bunch of folks, and turns-out that three of us were Defiance residents: Neshamah; 2bit; and myself. Our next date is coming up in August and I'll post flyers here when they're finished.

ALSO, and this is something pretty big...

I've decided that since I have distribution from many labels, that I should just post reviews of everything new on here when I finally get to listening to it.

So the question that remains is.... WHAT albums do you want me to preview and post reviews of on this listing? I have almost every advance that is released, and if I don't have it, I can get it.

Heavy Industrial oriented traditional Belly Dancing music

for any and all to dance to
at this week's DEFIANCE, Friday (midnight performance), November 17th
at Club Caution (516 Front Street, Santa Cruz)

I will be joined by Switchblade Symphony founding member, Robin Jacobs on guitar and
the amazing John Connell (multi-instrumentalist) on bass guitar.

I've been disappointed that a lot of tribal and gothic belly dancing music always seems so ambient and new-agey at times
so I wanted to do something a little darker and aggressive yet till use rhythms that anyone who's ever even had a beginning
belly dancing class would be able to dance to.

All the rhythms will be traditional......................all the sounds will NOT be.

I hope you can make it, I hope you feel like dancing.

NEW Projects from Defiance DJs

Hey everybody,

So our very beloved Neshamah and Voidypaws have two, new things going on over at the King of Clubs in Mountain View.

Neshamah and :VoiD: are doing a Friday-night event called "Nemesis." Neshamah will be DJing with us on Defiance Fridays, and I have encouraged :VoiD: to take the resident gig at Nemesis since it's a great opportunity for his DJ career to have a weekly, WEEKEND gig. He will be performing with us tomorrow, October 27th, so if you're one of his stalkers, come party with us in SC on Friday.

Neshamah is also doing a dark rave party on Wednesday nights. This is the sort of thing that Hellraiver used to pull in New York City. It will be a cross of dark electronica, psytrance, deep tracks, and possibly some industrial-dance.

I will post more when I know more.

PIG Tour = Cancelled

Yes, the PIG show is cancelled on July 11th at the DNA Lounge. If you were going to get a ride from me, please don't get angry at *me*... get even with PIG!

On the plus side... since that is a Tuesday, I guess that means the Satori boys should start advertising that they threatened Raymond Watts to steal all of his patrons and forced him to cancel his appearance.

Our July band is TV. TV is one of the premiere electronic-industrial/EBM bands this side of the Mississippi. They're a very talented and energetic band live that will bring a great, classic EBM sound to the table. Our August band is The Strand. I've been DJing these guys for a while and they are absolutely one of the most fun bands you'll ever see live. Hey everybody!

The Lord of the Gothspel and the Guardian of the Seventh Seal, Narce Talksin... and the Electronic Hitman from Beyond Planet X, pHreakiBoi... are both off of the Defiance Injured List this month and are ready to rock on THIS Friday.

Both suffered extreme back trauma when attempting to save a stranded puppy in the middle of highway 17 two months ago, but they are back!

If any further changes in the roster are going to happen, they will be posted here.

The Cult of Defiance marks its return this Friday, June 16th, like
a rocket from the crypt. We continue to bring you a fully-fledged
assault on the senses with more gothic rock, industrial, new wave,
psychobilly, punk, and psytrance than ever before. This month we
welcome our new addition, DJ Paw, who will be spinning new wave and
psychobilly from the Black Cat Lounge. This hip cat is one of the
area's best kept secrets and we're proud to have him on board.

Resident DJs for the night are: Narce; Dante; Meester; Tristan von
Wasserspeier; and pHreakiBoi. Guest DJs are: Paw; Mike.Creep+Kelly;
Void;and C.Grey.

The back room will be a gothic/industrial party from 9:00 pm until
the stroke of midnight, when we will be featuring the High Priest of
the Thirteenth House of the Gothspel, Narce Talksin, who has recently
cheated death itself and will mark his glorious return to Defiance
with a late-night set of gothic rock. Earlier in the evening, we
will have: the Industrial-dance Terrorist from Beyond Deutschland,
Tristan von Wasserspeier; the Nemesis of the Dark Electronic Beat,
pHrekiBoi; and the Archbishop of Malta, Dante.

In the Black Cat Lounge we have: the Man from Beyond the 666th Pit
of Hell, the one who weaves a tapestry of sound so chilling that even
your ancestors feel it, the one, the only, Meester; joining him will
be the Deathrock Duo
and Lords of Dark Lounge, Mike.Creep and Kelly; and, last but not
least, the Psychobilly with more Blood on His Hands than Stagger Lee,
the man with carries a razorblade in his shoe, the infamous Paw.

In the side room we have: the Electro'dustrial Terrorist from
South of Heaven, the German with more guns than miles on his tank,
Tristan von Wasserspeier; the Killer Wanted in Seventeen Countries
for Exporting Dark Beats, the artist who transcends all known
boundaries of space, time, sound, and pants, pHreakiBoi; the Lord of
Rivetheads from the Ninth Continent, the enigmatic and undefinable,
Void; and, Lord of Arcane Gothic Industrial from Beyond the

Suggestions on How to Cure Our Beloved GothFather, DJ Narce

Help Charles Find a DJ Name

So, our good friend, Charles, needs a DJ name, but he needs one that doesn't completely suck.

We're taking suggestions until we get a good one... or else I'm just going to give him a really bad title like I do to everybody else....

So please, save him from that and give him a cool, DJ name. If you do and he picks it, I'll be buying you beers tonight. Please, no gerunds, or sentence fragments... basically don't give him a name that sounds like an emo band. Ex. DJ "Killing the Wicked."

If you don't, he's going to end-up being DJ "I Need a Playstation 3" or something else, equally bad.

Defiance Music and Video Request List Open + A Very Incomplete New Release List

As always... if you want it - we'll have it on hand - ask and it shall be given. We love requests and we have the DJs and multi-genre format to do it. If you want some psychobilly/punk/deathrock, bother Meester/Neshamah/Kelly/andCreep, if you want dark electronic, bother pHreakiBoi/Tristan/Ðante... if you want gothic rock, goto Narce/Meester (if you want the Mission UK, ask me, not Narce,)... if you want EBM/industrial-dance, ask Tristan or me... and if you want experimental/military_ambient/structured_noise, ask me beforehand and I'll bring it.

VIDEOS and what-not:

We are open to almost any video suggestions, from Metropolis to that video of Bettie that Meester always wants to play. If you bring a DVD to the club, chances are if we like it we'll just toss it in the DVD player in the front or the back. We LOVE videos of live performances... and we'll probably have one or two by Bauhaus this Friday from the tape collection of Narce.

MUSIC and An Incomplete New Release List...etc:

Concerning new releases of the more mainstream, goth'dustrial, yes, we have the following new albums + many more (these are all COMPLETE albums).... Amduscia... Android Lust... Angel Theory.. Hey everybody.... just for further clarification... (yes... I already posted this in response to Valerie's posting, but here we go again for your reading enjoyment)....

The next "official" Defiance.. with all six DJs, all three decks, Deathline International, and all of that is on May 19th.

The next Defiance-sponsored EVENT is THIS SATURDAY, March 18th @ Club Caution.

It's $3. It's going to be Meester, Neshamah, probably me, and maybe one or two others from our pool of DJs. We'll be taking over the Black Cat Lounge. We *may* be DJing the bar room, too, but I don't know about that yet. Stay tuned for more.

Oh yes.. .and in the back of the club will be the Battle of the Bands. So there's going to be an interesting mix of hardrock crowd and Defiance crew.

We'll still be giving away guestlist spots, and we'll probably be giving away some tickets for May 19th, which is not only marks our one-year anniversary, but also another great date for a live band with Deathline International. We may have an opener or not - keep your eyes peeled.

This is my first direct post to this tribe so I figure it best to introduce myself even though my profile and blog does most of that for me already, Hmmm. . . Anyway I'm Chaz aka Da Chaz, Janus, or X. I'm working on eliminating the alias' really I am. Anyway I am an affable easy going aquarious / water dog.

I am hetero however I am capable of being comfortable with sharing affections with the same sex provided I'm a tad familar with them *ahem*. When meeting new people I am a bit timid and shy, not that I am uncomfortable with myself, just that I am overly conciderate of how other people feel. I easily open up though the more I interact with people.

I am highly empathetic and affectionate person however I only lavish my affection on those who wish it. Also, dispite my empathetic nature I am socially oblivious due to living a reclusive childhood, which explains why I am unsure if any ones interested in me until they start sticking their tongue down my throat.

Hey everybody,

So there are a lot of people to thank for this event running as
well as it did. In no particular order, here are some categories
(staff, sound, DJs, and venue,) and there will be lots of thank-yous
in each one. Most importantly, we have to thank our very loyal
patrons for almost one-year of great parties! Many of you have been
with us through everything, and we look forward to your continued
support.

STAFF: HUGE thanks goes out to Polly, Valerie, and Charles for
holding together so much of the business end of things, making calls,
writing emails, promoting, arranging for something to be on time, and
just getting things *done* before and during the event, including
setting-up, helping with load-in, buying things at the last second,
and more. Thanks to Polly for always having the plan together,
executing and devising like a pro, and dealing with me more often
than should be legal. Thanks to Valerie for keeping the strings tied
neatly at the edges and making sure all the particulars are always
arranged. Thanks to Charles for always helping the band and
regulating like a champ.

Photographic thanks to Andrew and Amelia for taking pictures every
time we need it. Thanks goes out to Alex for letting us use more
bandwidth than we're probably worth ever since starting this project
in May and offering tons of tech support. Thanks to Jean for being
calm and always pulling for us behind the scenes.

Lots of thanks due to all of our friends and family who have run
flyers to the dark side of the Moon and back many, many times for us.
We owe you lots of drinks, guest-passes, and kisses, so please
remember to call and remind us when we forget!

SOUND: HUGE thanks goes out to two, very important Ricks: Rick
Walker; and Rick from TLD. Rick Walker not only saved our hides with
a last-second, drum kit loan within 24 hours of the event when
another person dropped-out, he helped keep the levels on the board
stable throughout the show, and he helped us find a bass amp. Rick
from TLD helped get the sound just right during sound check, despite
numerous technical difficulties. Thanks goes out to More Music for
helping us with some loaner equipment.

DJs: MAJOR thanks to all of our DJs. Thanks to Jean, Tristan, and
Murias for keeping the front room bumpin' throughout the night. Lots
and lots of undead thanks to Meester for always being a hip cat and
keeping the BCL partying all night long. Lots of unholy thanks to
Patrick for keeping the back floor dancing throughout the night -
everybody is going to miss you for sure. Thanks to X-ian for showing
up and helping out even though you didn't have to.

VENUE: Last but not least, lots of thanks to Troy, Mike, and
Darrel for giving us this opportunity in the first place, and for
being fantabulous, supportive, and patient. Major thanks to Troy and
Mike for setting up the venue's extra equipment for the band before
we even arrived. Huge thanks to Darrel for helping run the event and put-out
fires the night of the event.

Thanks to our wonderful security staff for always being cool,
(including Foster, Larry, and Hawk). Thanks to Faith for all of our
bar needs and running a tight ship in the front. Thanks to all of

Defiance in March/April + May 19th UPDATES

A few things since people have been asking,

1. We move BACK to third-Fridays for as long as the eye can see on May 19th.

2. We are doing a few, third-Saturday events for March and April, but Deathline is not playing until May 19th.

The third-Saturday events will be scaled-down, smaller Defiance parties in the BCL room. We may have another deck setup - we do not know as of now.

3. The Deathline Show has been postponed until May 19h.

4. Originally, we intentionally moved the Deathline date (and changed ALL of our flyers, called the appropriate parties, and emailed people in-the-know) to March 18th MONTHs ago to accomodate the Chemlab show. I even called Basil and a few people in SF to let them know the *minute* we changed it, (which was on January 20th at around 8:00pm, I believe).

That being said...

5. Yes, it has been listed incorrectly on the web page and I apologize about that. That is a mistake that should not have been made.

6. All of the above being said, there is no excuse for certain individuals in SF talking major amounts of shit about our booking Deathline International without so much as even ONCE emailing staff, sending a Tribe.net/MySpace message, or calling my personal cell phone for clarification. (I am not talking about Nightbird, btw - I'm glad he reminded us of the web page error!)

Once again, I view the web page mistake as a lesser-issue since I have sent emails to promoters, changed dates on flyers, and called people (yes, the band and other promoters knew very soon after we changed the date).

Spin THIS! this saturday

There were several that had requested that I let them know about the next Spin THIS! and some of the details.

We were able to get a phenomenal space, the Blue Cube. Able to be 18+ and until 4am... yummy kitchen, the "cook" is an actual chef and he comes up with some tasties.....cajun pizzas hmmmmm
This month we are having 5 bands performing live, and I have lost count as to how many DJs. I think 10? A body painter, Clay (he's even from Santa Cruz) Got live Vjing and always eve more craziness of some sort pops its head up and we play with it. ;^)

It is a pretty damn great party. The feel, vibe, and crowd take me back a few years when there were teh larger goth industrial clubs.

I will be upfront... if you are looking for goth music, it will not be here. ;^(
This event is all about dark electronic music of any kind we can find. Start with dark ambient and work your way to the power, throw in some IDM, trance, breaks, jungle, d'n'b, Industrial, elektro, and techno and mix it all up, and then try to find what the cat drags in. It is always dark, and heavy. ;^)

Our cover is $5 b4 1030 and then $8. Not sure how we do that... hmmmm...
But, since most of you are down in Santa Cruz area, and would be travelling a bit. I let you know how you can potentially get in for free.

Be prepared for the usual crypt-rocking tunes from your undead childhood coupled with enough dark party music to truly call the dead back home. Your host, Meester, will make sure that every good request gets special attention, and will use his unholy powers to ensure that a martini glass will never leave your hand while in the Black Cat Lounge.

The back room will be a combination of the talents of: Our Lord of
the Gothspel, Narce Talksin; the Archbishop of Malta and Sunny Elba, Dante; the Rivethead from Beyond the Seventh Seal, Tristan von Wasserspeier; the Inflictor of Vernian Justice, RickA.Mortis; and our honoured guest, the leader of the Dark-Techno Collective and All Electronic that is Beyond Evil, PhreakiBoi. Leaether Strip Fan Arrested + KLUTE Information

So here is a great story about a Leaether Strip fan being arrested (at the bottom of this post)... and....

US arrests Leaether Strip fan with words 'suicide bomber' written in his
journal
It looks like a first victim has fallen under the spell of Leaether Strip's
"Suicide Bombers" EPCD. Reuters reports that an airline passenger with the
words 'suicide bomber' written in his journal was arrested by the FBI when
his plane arrived in San Jose, California, on Wednesday, January 4th. The
man was able to explain that the words referred to the music by Claus Larsen
and was free to go after hours of interrogations. The fan was observed by
fellow passengers as having a journal and hand written on the journal were
the words 'suicide bomber'. That, combined with the fact that he was
clutching a back pack and 'acting a little suspiciously' prompted law
enforcement to act so the FBI declared in a statement. Authorities boarded
the plane and arrested the man on the Frontier Airlines plane. Alfa Matrix
and Leaether Strip have asked the fan to make his identity known so that he
can be compensated in a musical way for the trouble undergone. It is not the
first time that Alfa Matrix faces the US authorities. In 2001 the US customs
seized hundreds of copies from Mnemonic's debut album because needles were
found in several limited boxes in the same pack. It was only after an
intervention by the Belgian embassy that the stock was delivered.

Ikon Remasters Released + New Spetsnaz Album

Hey everybody,

This is just a list of some long-overdue thanks and updates on the Defiance Project from all of us over here. So here we go!

A huge thank you goes out to all of our supporters!!!! The past six months have been a really wonderful experience for those of us who bring this event to you, and we owe it all to your massive support. None of us had imagined this event would expand into its current form, but it has indeed blossomed into something beautiful and you have played a major role.

Another thank you goes out to our staff!!! Major thanks goes to all members of staff, big and small, for helping things run smoothly throughout the course of the month, and with making sure everybody keeps his/her sanity during the night of an event. It can be a very thankless job and you have earned a huge thanks from all of us.

A NEW RESIDENT. Join us in welcoming Tristan von Wasserspeier into the Defiance Project fold. His industrial-dance skills are simply too irresistible for us to pass up. A complete biography on this German rivetboi will be posted on the web page under the "DJs" section soon.

THE NEXT EVENT. It's December 16th, so mark your calenders. We are going to do some different things this time, so keep your eyes peeled.

DISCOUNTS. We will continue the discount for all SC Vampires in leathers indefinitely. The admission will be $3. If there is a band and we have to raise the cover, the discount is $2 off whatever cover may be that night, (and we will post that here).

PICTURES: Stay-tuned to this web page over the next week as we will be adding two galleries of pictures - one for November and one from October - as our long-lost camera has been recovered.

Here is roughly what the DJ schedule and formats will be like for November 18th.

Black Cat Lounge = Meester, Neshamah, and RickA.Mortis. Format = Death + anything that will resurrect your long-lost love.

Bar Room = Neshamah, RickA.Mortis + A rotation of Tristan/Ðante/Narce when possible. Format = Newwave + 80s + more dance music.

Back Room = Narce, Dante, RickA.Mortis, and Tristan. Format = gothic rock, darkwave, industrial-dance, EBM, and etc.

All,

Due to the high amount of requests offline for new music, I will be busting-out my collection of brand-new (2005/2006) releases and more-recent (2003-2006) albums, and playing them from 9:00pm-10:30pm with Tristan.

For those of you into noise, neofolk, gothic-rock, industrial, and experimental, be prepared to hear a LOT of new things in those genres. I will be bringing the latest albums by bands such as Death in June, Killing Joke, Current 93, the 1st and 2nd Supporter CDs from Einsturzende Neubauten, (generously donated by a friend,) Leaether Strip, Foetus, Manufactura, and much, much more.

Come prepared for bands you have never heard of before. Come prepared for bands you know from year's past that are now much different.

In the Black Cat Lounge, we will have the hippest man west of the

from San Jose, Neshamah, launching their usual brand of post-punk,
deathrock, psychobilly, and lots of cult classics to keep your bones
moving to the beat.

Wasserspeier, the EBM and noise Archbishop of Malta, Ðante, the man

As some of you may have heard me rant in the past, few years, I am a huge fan of the band SCHAFT. They were best-known for their collaboration in Japan among Buck-Tick and PIG. (Before Raymond was involved, they did a short stint on this noise-like comp). In short, they flew Raymond Watts out to Tokyo, fed him some sushi, rented him any studio he wanted in the world for a few months, and they had some talented people mix (and remix) all of the song.

A Goth Community Response to the recent tragic slaying in the Bay Area

Because of all the terrible fallout to goth kids in the US after Columbine shootings (kids who wore black and had zip to do with goth)
I think we should be very proactive about these news developements
in this horrible slaying in the bay area.

I would suggest that we sign a petition at Defiance, Fate and the Box
that says that this persons actions in no way represent the Santa Cruz Goth community and that we are horrified by what this person has done.

If we all sign a petition and send it immediately as a 'letter to the editor' to all three newspapers in town..............to KZSC and KUSP as PSA announcements and copies to the City Council and the Police Department we can very publicly and very vociferously distance ourselves from this horrible tragedy.

As a recent Arts Commissioner for the City of Santa Cruz,an advocate for Music and the Arts in the city for many years and a respected member of the establishment musical scene here, I would be happy to head the list and present copies to all these people. It might lend it some legitimacy. I offer this for efficacy, not for ego's sake.

There is a place where we can be very cyncical about this (it is typical in a way to have these kinds of responses in puritan America) but we would be doing this for the 12-18 year old newbie goths whose lives are much more impacted by the beauracracy of schools and local law enforcement (I think about parties being stopped , et. al.)

Unless there is a tremendous outcry to NOT TAKE THIS ACTION, I"ll draw up a simple statement..........post it here and bring it to Defiance tonight and the Box on Monday night.

Please take two seconds and lend your John Hancock to it.

Defiance Halloween Celebration
Friday, October 21st at Club Caution, 516 Front Street, Santa Cruz,
18+, $5

Join the Cult of Defiance for a Halloween celebration of epic
proportions on Friday, October 21st, as we break-out the skeletons in
our closet to bring you an event from beyond the grave and mark our
return back to 18+. Come dressed-to-the-hilt in your best attire as
staff will be judging costumes for prizes, and cross your fingers as
we will have lots of other give-aways as well.

Heading up the Black Cat Lounge, will be the Infamously Undead
Meester and the Unholy Spectre of Post-Punk, RickA.Mortis/Fact.50.
The format this month will include nightmarish anthems buried
six-feet under, spooktasticly terrifying post-punk from another
world, and, as usual, anything else that reeks of the tomb.

In the back room we will have His High Holiness, the Leader of the
Gothspel, Narce, the Archbishop of Evil EBM and Noise, Dante, the
Vengeful Hand of Gothic'Industrial Music, RickA.Mortis/Fact.50, and
the Most Horrifying Ghoul of Harsh Industrial, Tristan von
Wasserspeier, plus guests that will keep your toes tapping, take you
back to your gothic'industrial childhood in Europe, and reanimate
your long-lost relatives for that undead family reunion in Disneyland
you've dreamt about for years.

As always, open DJ tryouts start at 8:00pm and band demos are
